Hospitals aren’t ignoring nurses by accident—they’re following the money, the data, and the hierarchy.
AI solutions in healthcare have largely been built to enhance diagnostics, physician documentation, billing and clinical decision-making; mission critical endeavors indeed. This real estate has traditionally been owned by physicians, not nurses. This is where the clearest ROI has been for faster diagnoses, reduced liability, measurable efficiency gains and a happier physician workforce. Naturally, early AI investments—and the training and support that follow—flow to doctors first.
Clearly there's also a structural issue at play: healthcare innovation has long been physician-centric, with limited nursing representation in design, governance, or policy. As we can see, even national frameworks now reflect this imbalance. This logic misses the reality of seamless, patient-centered care delivery, and here's why.
Nurses are the workforce glue that inarguably serve as the continuous presence at the bedside, translating plans into action, catching subtle deterioration and managing the discernment and complexity that most (humans and algorithms) can’t see. Many AI and automation solutions are designed without nursing workflows in mind, with the 800+ data points nurses need to capture and document per shift, resulting in friction and potential care/communication gaps. Without nurse-influenced resources and solutions, AI doesn’t just underperform—it can become unsafe, expensive and inefficient. It also will likely result in low adoption and erosion of trust, rendering future AI initiatives even more difficult to implement.
In order for AI infrastructure to follow through on its promise to improve patient outcomes, workforce satisfaction and efficiency, we need to shift this paradigm. This is what our teams at Aiva have been working on with and for nurses.
Thank you to the exceptional, empathic and essential nurses that lean to tirelessly and selflessly support patients and families. Next week and every day we recognize, honor and hear you! ❤️
